Know Your Worth: The Importance Of Self-Validation

It always feels good to get attention and praise from someone else, doesn’t it?

It feels like you are on the right track. You get validated for something, and it feels like you did a good job and you’re deeply appreciated. This is something that has been installed in each and every one of us ever since we were little. We learn that we need external validation to feel good. As we grow, this need for validation from others expands as our circle of people expands too, and the need becomes a must. This is exactly when enough is enough.

It is time for you to know your worth and bring the attention back to yourself. While it always feels good to have others validate you, self-validation is something else entirely. When you rely on external validation this much, it can make you feel less worthy and even depressed. Stress creeps in at every corner, and things can get so severe that at one point you will find yourself relying on others to make yourself feel good. Now when you read this, it doesn’t sound right, does it?

But how to learn self-validation? Is this something you are born with? Is this something you gain and lose over time?

The answer to all the questions is yes.

How To Validate Yourself

Do you know what self-validation includes?

Here is a list to give you an idea.

Self-validation means:

  • You constantly encourage yourself and say nice things to yourself
  • You treat yourself with kindness
  • You put your needs first
  • You know what your strong sides are, and you acknowledge success, effort, and progress
  • You accept your limitations and know you have flaws (and make mistakes)

Contrary to this, when you criticize yourself, minimize who you are and what you’re doing, and compare yourself to others – this means that you do not know how to validate yourself.

Thankfully, there are a few ways you can change that. After all, self-validation exercises require constant practice. As you get better at this, you will notice your need for external validation will decrease. Here are a few steps you can take.

  1. Start to notice how you feel. Also, start to notice what you need.
  2. Validate your emotions and needs, and let them pass through you without judgment.
  3. There is no need to over-identify your feelings. The feelings are temporary – they come and they go.
  4. Practice – always practice if you want to make it perfect!

Last but not least, don’t forget this – treat yourself like the best friend you have, and always give yourself the love you give others. Say good things to yourself, and you will start to notice that you feel better.

Self-validation is a lengthy process, and you will have some ups and downs. But the most important thing is that you give yourself everything you have, every day.
