How Does Stress Impact Your Mental Health
Mar 05, 2025
Stress is a normal part of our lives as humans. We have it and we deal with it every day.
But, has it ever happened to you to just stop and think why this is happening? Why are you dealing with too much stress?
Have you reached your limit already? Is there a limit to stress?
The answer to everything may be yes. While stress is normal, too much of it, for too long – is not.
When you feel stressed for a longer period, it messes with who you are – literally.
If this has happened to you, you’ve probably felt all the consequences – mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Today, you will discover how stress impacts your mental health, and what you can do to avoid it.
What Are The Effects Of Stress On Mental Health?
What you may not be aware of just how much stress impacts your mental health and physical well-being. It fills your body up with adrenaline and cortisol (which can be good in very small amounts).
But if this constantly happens, you may experience a variety of signs of stress:
- You may start forgetting things and experience brain fog
- You may start to feel like you are constantly exhausted and even unable to get out of bed
- Trouble sleeping is another consequence too
- It feels like everything that is happening to you, you feel it ten times worse than it is
Does any of this sound familiar? If it does, then it is time to find a way to protect your mental health and reduce the stress you feel.
How To Reduce Stress
There are many ways you can reduce stress, especially if it interferes with your mental health. Remember, a part of this is learning how to manage stress as well as reduce it.
Take a look at the steps below:
- It Is Time To Calm Down
Stop holding your breath. Instead, try to take deep breaths in and out for a period of 4-10 seconds (inhale) and 4-10 seconds (exhale). You will immediately feel better. - Get Out (Of Your Head And Your Home)
Whenever you feel the effects of stress on your mental health, you need to know how to cut the ties with the stressed part of you.
The best thing you can do is to get out of your head. But, sometimes people don’t really know how to do this. I’ve learned that a walk in nature, or simply getting out of the home can do wonders to calm you down. - Learn How To Say No
One of the reasons why you’re overwhelmed most of the time is because you keep taking on obligations that you know you cannot fulfill.
Naturally, when this happens, stress piles up, and you end up overcommitting to something you know you can’t possibly fulfill.
Start to say no – and don’t feel guilty about it. - Set Some Time For Yourself
Take a bath, exercise, read a book – anything that will get you out of that state of stress you’re in. Even if it is only 10-20 minutes of it – when you know you’ve dedicated some time to yourself, things seem easier.
Stress impacts your mental health quite significantly, but there are many ways to reduce it. Simply take some for yourself and do the things that make you happy. Remember – no matter how busy life might get, you always need to make time for your mental well-being.
